[Vision2020] How's This for Cool?

The Smart for Two was developed to address the shortage of parking in European cities. It can legally be parked parallel or perpendicular to the curb (in Europe, not the US) It was made to be crash worthy, and without a hood or trunk, it required a heavy rollcage, hence the low MPG. US testers have not been kind as to its drive-ability. You can get better mileage on other cars more practical for our conditions.

My wife drives a GEO Metro. She loves it. The motor recently went out. She could not fine another car that she liked or gets the milage it does. She finely had a new motor put in it. She get 50 to 53 on it. I get about 22 on my caravan.

But the hoopla surrounding this 40-mpg vehicle evokes BMW’s reintroduction of the Mini in 2002. Today the Mini costs between $17,000 and $30,000. The Smart Fortwo costs between $12,000 and $17,000. Still, this is no guarantee for success. While two-seat micro cars have been popular in Europe for decades, Smart is actually losing money in that market.
