[Vision2020] How's This for Cool?

I don't quite understand why this tiny car that has been developed to be more environmentally friendly only gets 40 mpg. quite frankly, for a vehicle this ugly, it would have to get at least 80mpg to make it worth it drive and for the environment. even the chevy geo, a car that has long since been discontinued, was able to get over 50 mpg.
this in no improvement.

The only reason an American would buy that car would be for their son to use it in his sandbox.

  The Mercedes Smart Fortwo

  20,000!

That’s about as many of the cars as the Mercedes Benz Smart division had planned to sell in the U.S. for all of 2010. Admittedly, deposits on the two seaters are only $99 a pop. But the hoopla surrounding this 40-mpg vehicle evokes BMW’s reintroduction of the Mini in 2002. Today the Mini costs between $17,000 and $30,000. The Smart Fortwo costs between $12,000 and $17,000. Still, this is no guarantee for success. While two-seat micro cars have been popular in Europe for decades, Smart is actually losing money in that market.
