of Sciences reports on climate change referenced at the following
website, to expand your knowledge of this issue. Will this help? My

As to your distortions of my statements in this thread...
I spelled out rather explicitly why I thought you were distorting my
meaning regarding the "anti-science" attitudes I referenced in my post
in this thread. Your response does not mention economist Lomborg's
views on climate change, or the National Academy of Sciences reports
on climate change from May 2010, sources that were central to clarify
why I exactly thought you were in error in your assessment that I was
"unscientific" in some sense. Why you ignore sources that were
central to my point, I don't know.

You specifically quoted my statement that anthropogenic climate
warming is "the most critical problem facing humanity," and followed
that quote by stating that if there is disagreement with me, I am
saying this anti-science. I did not specifically state this regarding
my view that global warming is the most critical problem facing
humanity. And I gave an example of a well known public figure who has
published on the economics, etc. of climate change, Bjorn Lomborg, who
suggests there are other human problems that it is more important to
address, than climate change, but who also accepts that anthropogenic
climate change is a scientifically demonstrated reality. I would not
describe Lomborg as anti-science, though he appears to not place
addressing climate change as the most critical problem facing
humanity.
Therefore I am not stating that all people who disagree with me that
anthropogenic climate change is "the most critical problem facing
humanity" are "anti-science."
Also, in referencing the May, 2010 release from the National Academy
of Sciences on climate change, I stated that the anti-science views I
am referring to claim that the climate science behind that release
from the National Academy of Sciences (the website was given above
again) is a fraud or a hoax, or is based on widespread scientific
incompetence. I don't believe there is credible evidence this is the
case. Lomborg does not state, as far as I know, that the National
Academy of Sciences of the US are engaged in fraudulent climate
science, nor that there is widespread incompetence involved in the the
NAS's assessment of what climate science is revealing.
I do think objections to the National Academy of Sciences assessment
of climate change are possible that are not anti-science. But such an
objection based on scientific claims would not assert that the NAS is
engaged in a massive fraud, nor that there is widespread scientific
incompetence associated with the NAS. Again, I have not read any
credible evidence these extreme positions are warranted; and I think
people who insist they are warranted are expressing an unjustified
anti-science attitude.

Central to the point of my original post in this thread was that many
people who do have critical thinking skills, who are intelligent and
well educated about the world, still display anti-science and
anti-progressive attitudes. I was pointing out that what determines
beliefs can sometimes have little to do with level of intellect or
education, but is rather a socially conditioned state of mind. Thus
some smart well educated people born in Iran end up Islamic, and some
smart well educated people born in the US end up Christian, because of
their social conditioning, not based on an objective survey of all
religious belief followed by a dispassioniate logical assessment as to
what religion is the closest to the truth. Emotional investment in an
idea can result in confirmation bias filters that reject evidence that
contradict the idea. How many intelligent well educated people fimlly
believe in life after death for a "soul," a claim I think is not well
supported by scientific evidence?
Anyway, enough of this... There is important climate science to
study, Paul N. Edwards "A Vast Machine," a brand new copy of which the
U of I library recently obtained.
