Perhaps, if there are few jobs available, food stamps and unemployment checks might be the best way to stimulate the feeding of families, especially children, until the economy improves.  I'm glad you support the local groups, but it's hard for me to imagine that "state-sponsored welfare programs," which you think should only be temporary, nonetheless can't do a better job on a grander scale to promote societal health than even the most blessed, well-run private groups.
