Bedke: Don't expect House to cave in 2011 on taxes

 - The Associated Press

There's conjecture around the Idaho Capitol that lawmakers will be under so
much budget pressure in the 2011 Legislature - the one starting next January
- that they'll have no choice but to raise taxes.

House Assistant Majority Scott Bedke says that's not accurate, given that
most members of the Republican-dominated House Revenue and Taxation
Committee will still be in office after the November 2010 elections.

That's the committee where all tax legislation in the Idaho Legislature
starts, and a majority of its panelists, Bedke included, aren't keen on new
taxes of any form, regardless of the state of the economy.

He told reporters at an Idaho Press Club event Tuesday, "If the
personalities in the House are similar to the way they are now, it's still
going to be a hard thing."

Bedke also said it's premature to begin predicting whether Idaho's budget
situation during the 2011 session will be dire.
