[Vision2020] North Latah County Highway District sign policy

Here's' a view from one who lives on and uses North Latah County Highway District maintained roads.

We are very grateful for the stripes the district has painted and the speed limits they have posted, enforceable or not.  The driving conduct of the public on some county roads is absolutely atrocious!  Not only is excessive speed common, but many seem to believe that they may drive in the middle or on the left side of the road with impunity.  The Latah County Sheriff's Department does not have enough resources to deploy on this epidemic problem.

Between the Karen Lane intersection and the top of Saddle Ridge, there is not 10 feet of Saddle Ridge Road where some dumb speeding ass has not gone off the road in the 19 years we have lived here.  One person has went off at least five times -- speed being the major factor.

In our neighborhood there are school children who walk to the school bus, walkers are about 24/7, horseback riders use the road, etc. All these are constantly put into peril, not to mention the wildlife that not only in peril, but victims off speeding and/or wrong side of the road drivers.  This year alone, three fawns have been killed by reckless, speeding drivers in a one mile stretch.

Our neighborhood petitioned the highway district for stripes about 3 - 4 years ago.  When the stripes were painted, a great deal of the wrong side of the road driving was eliminated.  So was some of the speeding.

The state law needs to be changed so that local agencies can determine their own speed limits.  So far, the "I'm in favor of local control" conservatives have vehemently opposed this change.  Perhaps our local state legislators can try again to change this asinine "one size fits all" law (after all, its a public road, not a prostitute).

In the meantime, thank you North Latah Highway District for the stripes and speed limit signs.

Now if there were only some nonlethal way to get rid of the multitude of yellow-bellied, chicken shit road hunters that plague and endanger us from the end of August until the end of December, we'd be even more appreciative.

  Wayne, don't get your panties too bundled up.  The highway district could just change the color of the signs to black and yellow - they then become advisory/warning signs - just like you see on curves.  The law is just fine and so are our highway district personnel.  Chuck Kovis
