Moscow Food Co-op Donates to Two Local Community Groups

The Palouse Prairie School of Expedition Learning received $320.30 in July and Center for Civic Engagement at Washington State University received $249.00 in August from the Moscow Food Co-op's A Dime in Time community donation program.

The Co-op's A Dime in Time program was created to support local, non-profit organizations. Co-op shoppers currently receive a 10-cent discount when they use their own bags or coffee cups. Co-op customers now have the option to donate those dimes to the organization selected as that month's recipient.

In July shoppers donated 3,203 dimes to the Palouse Prairie School, a new charter school in Moscow, Idaho that uses expeditionary learning curriculum design principles, which includes active and collaborative learning practices. The school opened in the fall of 2009 and will use the A Dime in Time funds for a bike rack.

In August shoppers donated 2,490 dimes to the WSU Center for Civic Engagement, which promotes civic responsibility, community knowledge, and self awareness of students through education and action. University students have opportunities to serve communities in the Palouse and throughout Washington State. For 10 years, the Center for Civic Engagement has provided tutors to the rural communities of Colton, Colfax, Garfield, and Palouse.

Future recipients include University of Idaho's First Book program in September and Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse in October.

Local groups interested in being selected to receive future awards can submit a grant application found on the Co-op's website (www.moscowfood.coop). A committee made up of two Co-op board members, two Co-op staff members, and two Co-op customer members will review the applications and select recipients each quarter.

The Co-op is located at 121 East Fifth Street in downtown Moscow.
