<DIV><STRONG>Moscow Food Co-op Donates to Two Local Community Groups
<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><O:P></O:P><BR><O:P> </O:P></STRONG> <BR>The
Palouse Prairie School of Expedition Learning received $320.30 in July and
Center for Civic Engagement at Washington State University received $249.00 in
August from the Moscow Food Co-op’s <I>A <SPAN>Dime in Time</SPAN></I> community
donation program. <BR><O:P> </O:P> <BR>The Co-op's<I> </I><I>A<SPAN> Dime
in Time</SPAN></I> program was created to support local, non-profit
organizations. Co-op shoppers currently receive a 10-cent discount when they use
their own bags or coffee cups. Co-op customers now have the option to donate
those dimes to the organization selected as that month's recipient.
<BR><O:P> </O:P> <BR>In July shoppers donated 3,203 dimes to the Palouse
Prairie School, a new charter school in Moscow, Idaho that uses expeditionary
learning curriculum design principles, which includes active and collaborative
learning practices.<SPAN> </SPAN>The school opened in the fall of 2009 and
will use the <I>A Dime in Time</I> funds for a bike rack. <BR><O:P> </O:P>
<BR>In August shoppers donated 2,490 dimes to the WSU Center for Civic
Engagement, which promotes civic responsibility, community knowledge, and self
awareness of students through education and action.<SPAN>
</SPAN>University students have opportunities to serve communities in the
Palouse and throughout Washington State.<SPAN> </SPAN>For 10 years, the
Center for Civic Engagement has provided tutors to the rural communities of
Colton, Colfax, Garfield, and Palouse. <BR><O:P> </O:P> <BR>Future
recipients include University of Idaho’s First Book program in September and
Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse in October. <BR><O:P> </O:P>
<BR>Local groups interested in being selected to receive future awards can
submit a grant application found on the Co-op’s website (<U><A
href="http://www.moscowfood.coop/">www.moscowfood.coop</A></U>). A committee
made up of two Co-op board members, two Co-op staff members, and two Co-op
customer members will review the applications and select recipients each
quarter. <BR><O:P> </O:P> <BR>The Co-op is located at 121 East Fifth Street
