After reading this, it is clear, like Clinton, Obama wants the Democratic Party to be a Minority Party during the last six years of his Presidency:

Obama would profit handsomely with a Republican controlled Senate and/or House. Republicans could block everything, and Obama would blame them for everything going wrong. Republicans would claim they are stopping "Obama's Radical Liberal Agenda".
Both Democrats and Republicans would buy this hook, line, and sinker.
Democrats have been snared in a Catch 22 trap set by Obama.
Democrats must either vote for the plan, in which case it will be a disaster and the Democrats will be voted out of office by swing voters and moderates having to pay double their premiums or face extra fines from the IRS. Or they can vote against the plan. In which case Liberal Democrats will not support a Democrat that voted against much needed Health Care Reform, and lose to Republicans.
Either Case, the Senate and the House will shift more to Republicans in January of 2011. This will significantly increase the power of Obama. He cannot be blamed for things going wrong with the Republicans able to block needed reforms.
Even if the health plan turns out to improve health care for poorer Americans, it still will hurt Democrats because moderate and conservative Americans, the majority, will not like this being forced down their throats to buy health insurance from companies that have no limits on what they can charge you for your health care.
