Bear stated:
"Imagine if you will, a university President, or even an acting president
saying, "OK legislature/ regents, you have given me X amount of dollars to
run the university this year. I plan to cut out ALL inter-collegiate
sports, because they are not part of the core function of the university.
IF and when there is an up roar from the collegiate sports fans, YOU take
the heat for it!"
If I were that university president, I would not be concerned so much with
the response from the average collegiate sports fan as I would the
university's alumni association.
Collegiate sports fans may get upset at the termination of sports at their
favorite university and eventually they will find another school to cheer.
But when it comes to alumni, you are talking about their alma mater. Who
knows what alums with deep, heart-felt ties to their alma mater, deep
far-reaching connections, and deep pockets are likely to do?
