Carl,
You have a valid point when you wrote "While academics
clearly are number 1, the diversion of athletics and the memories
created for fans is important to the college experience, also.", and I
agree, BUT
there has to be a college to go to to have a college experience!
Imagine if you will, a university President, or even an acting president
saying, "OK legislature/ regents, you have given me X amount of dollars to
run the university this year. I plan to cut out ALL inter-collegiate
sports, because they are not part of the core function of the university.
IF and when there is an up roar from the collegiate sports fans, YOU take
the heat for it!". A university president that say academics come first
at this university.
And again, when money is plentiful, then it's not an issue, but in times
like this, it is.
