Hi Tom,

Thanks for the info on "The Forgotten War." There is a column there, as well as one on the new UI Indian Studies Program, which is only 100 years late in arriving.

Back in the 1980s I was contacted by a Japanese friend who could go anywhere in the U.S. for his sabbatical. When I asked him why he chose the UI over Harvard, he said that he wanted to study the Indians in the area. The Nez Perzes made him an honorary member and he had a terrific research experience. As coordinator of religious studies I was ashamed that we had done essentially nothing in this area. All that I had done was to guide one MA thesis on Indian philosophy.

Sometimes it takes outsiders to give us a symbolic blow to the side of the head to wake us up to the rich cultural diversity right on our doorstep.

Thanks again.

Nick
