[Vision2020] Is Our City Council 'Pulling aPalin'onDowntown Parking

I'm afraid that Dowd cuts no more ice than Olbermann or Maddow. Just one more person talking about an event that may or may not have occurred but your point is taken. I really only asked for the citation in the first place to give the hamster something to do with his copious free time. His wheel is starting to squeak and I thought that chasing his tail would come as a refreshing change.

enjoy your weekend,

Knowing how much you undoubtedly love Maureen Dowd... http://www.nytimes.com/1998/06/21/opinion/liberties-the-joke-s-on-him.html Her commentary really isn't the point with me. McCain's quote is simply contained therein. My point being, again, that verbal gaffes are made by all of us, regardless of political leaning, and we can spend too much time getting exercised over human mistakes. Mr. McCain apologized, and I'm sure that Chelsea, who has indeed grown up to be a very lovely young woman, is completely over this now. Letterman made a gaffe, he has apologized, and I'm sure that Ms. Palin will grow up to be a lovely young woman, and will likewise grow and prosper.

And the link to this 1998 NYT story is where? Search as I might I can find no documentation of McCain making the joke or, specifically apologizing for it. Insensitive jokes in general, yes. This precise joke, no. Lots of chatter by others referring to it but we all know what that counts for.

In John McCain's own words, quoted from a New York Times story in 1998:
The joke that he thought was funny was about Chelsea Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Janet Reno.
''This is the bad boy,'' he (McCain) said in a phone interview. ''It was stupid and cruel and insensitive. I've apologized. I can't take it back. I could give you a whole bunch of excuses, but there are no excuses. I was wrong, but do you want me crucified? How many days does it need to be a story?''
He said the Senator who spoke just before he did to the Republican fat cats made a tasteless joke about Viagra. ''So I got up and said, 'You think that was a tasteless joke? Listen to this one.' The minute it came out of my mouth, I thought, 'Oh no, this is a terrible mistake.' ''
But, he added, defensively, ''I will always maintain a sense of humor. Life is too short not to.''
Be it resolved: Neither conservatives or liberals, neither Republicans or Democrats (or Libertarians or Constitution Party, or Green Party or Save the Whales Party, or Eliminate the Designated Hitter Party) are above reproach when it comes to saying things that, in retrospect, probably should not have been said.
