The Latah County Human Rights Task Force is requesting nominations for the 2010 Rosa Parks Human Rights Achievement Awards. Two recipients are selected for this award each year and the awards are presented at the Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Community Breakfast. The 2010 Breakfast is scheduled for Saturday, January 16th at the Moscow Jr. High School. One award is given to a recipient who has a history of commitment and achievement in the field of human rights for our community. A Junior Award is presented to a high school or university student, or some other young person who is shows promise in the field of human rights.
The award is named for Rosa Parks, who refused to sit in the back of the bus as African Americans were required to do in Alabama. Her courage started the Montgomery bus boycott, which marked a great stride forward for human rights and integration. Past recipients of the award include Moscow High School teacher, Lee Anne Eareckson, Peace Coalition Leader, Rev. Dean Stewart, and Connie and Toney Driver, founders of the Finding the Center conferences.
The criteria for the selection of a Rosa Parks award include, but are not limited to, length of active participation in human rights causes; a record of leadership and accomplishment; and manifestations of special courage and commitment in opposing bigotry and celebrating diversity. To nominate an individual send a one page letter describing the accomplishments and background of the nominee and giving reasons to support the nomination to Latah County Human Rights Task Force, Box 8613, Moscow, ID 83843 or e-mail the nomination to Joann Muneta at jmuneta at uidaho.edu. .. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, December 23, 2009.
