That's the one ... and to remember that that was written three years before 
Nixon was elected, and eight years before he resigned. We went from a war 
unpopular among younger people to a switch from respecting the federal 
government to distrusting it -- and then worse ... 

Another memory, from summer time, 1973:
Televised coverage from a U.S. Senate Committee hearing room:

Nixon aide Mr. John D. Erlichman (at the witness table, paraphrased): Senator, 
how can you possibly not understand this perfectly obvious point?

Senator Sam Ervin (from the Chairman's seat, thundered): ''Because I can 
understand the English language. It's my mother tongue.''

Dark and frustrating times those were, a third of a century ago, when, in 
response to Senator Howard Baker's question "What did the President know, and 
when did he know it?" there were people willing to seek answers to it.
