I am not fond of many of Sali's votes and positions on issues. But I would not bash a US member of Congress that actually responded to my letter or email with something other than a canned response.

It is clear to me that Sali and/or his staff actually took the time and effort to research, find out the facts, and individualize their response to your letter so that they could provide information that was accurate.

I would be shocked to get such a response. As 90% of the time I write a government official I get a letter back that is either a canned general response, doesn't address what I was asking, or I never get a response at all.

August of an election year, is in all honestly, the worst time to write a politician as that is when they are trying to keep their jobs and must attend 1000s of events to keep up with campaign costs.

It would be nice if our represenatatives could  drop every thing, and respond to each request of them right away, but they are no doubt only human, and can only do what they can do. They have 650,000 people to watch out for, many writing them with letters, emails, requests, and demands, this is on top of their regular work as a member of Congress.

Best Regards,

Donovan

Visionaries:

I don’t know if y’all remember the “Ex-UI Researcher Faces Deportation” thread we had in early August – I think Tom originally brought the lunacy to our attention, and then Roger suggested we all write our elected representatives.

We wrote Sali on 8/5/2008 – below please see the response we received today, nearly three months after contacting his office.  There’s nothing like prompt attention to constituent concerns!

I expect a more timely response when I contact my elected officials; Sali will not be getting my vote on Tuesday.

Dear Dr. & Ms. Lund:

Thank you for contacting me regarding  University of  Idaho researcher Katarzyna Dziewanowska.  I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on this important issue.

As you may know, Ms. Dziewanowska is a Polish scientist who was recruited by the  University of  Idaho to conduct research on plant breeding.  Over her 14 years of research, she has made significant scientific contributions to her field.

Over the years, Ms. Dziewanowska has made a good-faith effort to become a permanent resident of the  United States .  She initially applied for temporary work permits and was granted the first one, but the second one was delayed because of problems with the photo she submitted.

Although her first permit expired, she continued working, believing there was a grace period on temporary work permits.  However, immigration officials citied that breach in denying her application for permanent residency in June.

Ms. Dziewanowska has the right to appeal the decision on her residency status to an immigration judge.  Please be assured I aware of this issue.  In fact I have inquired specifically on this matter and will continue to ask questions, and closely monitor any developments in this matter.

More information on granting permanent residence to foreign nationals based upon employment can be found on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website at http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis.

Thank you again for contacting me.  It is an honor to serve as your member of Congress, and I hope you will continue to share your views on the important issues facing our country.  For more information and updates on my work in Congress, please visit my website, www.sali.house.gov.

                                                                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                                                    Bill Sali
                                                                                                    Member of Congress
