Joe made the same mistake as you.
If you cannot separate the merits of an argument from the person
making the argument you commit the ad hominem fallacy, or "at man."
It's an evasive tactic designed to ignore the point.
For example, Ms. Mix has consistently called me names but she has
seldom, if ever, addressed one of my points.
Classic ad hom.
Bill London made a number of ad homs in his post but not once did he
even try to respond to any post or point of mine.

The founding fathers of our republic used pseudonyms in their debates
for precisely this reason. It removed the person making the argument
from the argument itself which forced the person replying to the
argument to answer it instead of resorting to name calling:
