The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends
May 9, 2008

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow, the University of Idaho's 113th commencement activities culminate
with two ceremonies. The Moscow campus ceremony is at 9:30 a.m. in the
ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center, and the College of Law ceremony is 3:30 p.m. in
Memorial Gymnasium. The Moscow-based candidates have applied for 1,096
bachelor's degrees, 91 law degrees, 43 doctoral degrees, four specialist
degrees and 195 master's degrees.

Among the approximately 1,429 graduates we will honor is Chris Chandler, who
will receive a bachelor's degree in dietetics. Chris is the recipient of a
Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship, and he will travel to Zimbabwe
later this year to continue his studies in nutritional anthropology. For
Melissa Newhouse, earning a bachelor's degree in accounting is part of a
cherished family tradition that stretches back to her great grandfather.
Melissa is the 48th member of her family to attend the University of Idaho.

Kirstin Larson '91, businesswoman and member of the University of Idaho
Foundation Board of Directors, will present the commencement address at the
University ceremony. The College of Law commencement speaker is B. Lynn
Winmill, U.S. District Judge for the District of Idaho. We are pleased to
recognize the accomplishments and leadership of three individuals by
presenting them with honorary degrees and welcoming them into the
University's legacy of leaders:

* Duane B. Hagadone of Coeur d'Alene, businessman, community leader and
philanthropist;

* Roger D. Ottmar of Seattle, Washington, research forester and educator;
and

* D. Tony Stewart of Coeur d'Alene, political scientist and human rights
activist.

We also will honor the 2008 inductees in the Alumni Association Hall of
Fame:

* Todd Kuiken of Oak Park, Illinois, a global leader in the design and
implementation of new prosthetic devices;

* Otis Livingston '91 of South Orange, New Jersey, sports anchor for "Today
in New York" on WNBC-TV in New York City; and

* Dayaldas Meshri '68 of Tulsa, Oklahoma, president and chief executive
officer of Advance Research Chemicals.

Commencement Day is truly inspiring, in both its pomp and circumstance and
the visible pride of the graduates and their families. I look forward to
congratulating each graduate as they walk across the stage tomorrow, and to
share in their excitement for the future.

Tim White
President

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

Marian Norton, a video production major, recently earned a platinum Remi
award for her screenplay, "The Aegis Conspiracy." It is the highest honor
awarded for screenplays at the annual WorldFest International Film Festival
in Houston. The Remi awards are named in honor of the late American painter
and sculptor, Frederic Remington. To fuel her drama, Norton combined fact
and fiction, and based her screenplay on the premise of a hacker taking over
the Navy AEGIS defense system. A native of Salmon, Idaho, Norton has penned
two published novels and eight screenplays. After graduation this fall, she
will continue screenwriting and writing literary fiction, and will redouble
her efforts to pitch her latest work to producers, backers and other
screenwriters.

An innovative product created in a University of Idaho laboratory to measure
biodiesel blend levels is the winner of the University's 2008 Business Plan
Competition. A team of students and the faculty member who invented the
device collaborated to develop a feasible business plan for the
patent-pending ultraviolet spectrophotometry testing system. Presented under
the company name of Accelerated Precision, this innovative product enables
any supplier, retailer or regulatory agency that sells or uses biodiesel to
ensure the blend level is correct. Team members are Scott Black, a senior in
civil engineering from Glenns Ferry; Mark Hoge, a senior in business
management from Blackfoot; and Shawn Britton, a senior in operations
management from Moscow. The three students will split the $6,000 cash prize.
Dev Shrestha, assistant professor of bioenergy, is the faculty adviser. The
Accelerated Precision team will now compete against other Idaho schools in
an early stage venture capital educational event at the Idaho TechLaunch in
Boise May 28-29.

In the early 1940s, Gerry Hagedorn began a lifelong relationship with the
University of Idaho track and field program as a javelin and discus thrower.
During his career, he has never been far from Vandal athletics. Hagedorn
recently made a generous donation of $25,000 to help "his" team - track and
field - purchase a new state-of-the-art timing system, pole vault pit and
high jump pit. In 2004, Hagedorn donated $100,000 to renovate the track and
field offices in memory of Mike Ryan, who was his coach at Idaho. Hagedorn
has been a constant supporter of Vandal athletics throughout the years
because he wants to make a difference in the lives of student-athletes. For
more information on giving to the Vandal Scholarship Fund, contact Andrea
Niehenke at (208) 885-2862 or niehenke at uidaho.edu
