Perhaps we could try leaving out the ridicule for just one topic?  Pat 
made (I thought) a good point.  Sending the child back went against the 
wishes of the mother who died in the attempt to bring him to this 
country.  I'm taking her word on the circumstances, because I don't 
remember the story well because I actively tried to avoid it since it 
flooded the airwaves for months at a time.  However, I think that 
Sunil's point is a good one.  Remove the government from control of the 
family, unless the parents are unfit, and keep politics out of it.  I 
wouldn't call living in a communist country being unfit, so I think they 
did the right thing.
