[Vision2020] celebrate human rights at Moscow MLK breakfast

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR./HUMAN RIGHTS COMMUNITY BREAKFAST

The 16th annual Martin Luther King Jr./ Human Rights Community Breakfast will be held Saturday, Jan. 17 9am to 11:30am at Moscow Jr. High School. The cost of admission is $8 general/ $ 4 students, and attendees are requested to bring non-perishable items for MLK Food Drive. 

The Latah County Task Force sponsors this annual event which includes breakfast, entertainment, presentation of Rosa Parks Human Rights Achievement Awards; announcement of winners of Martin Luther King Jr. Art & Essay Contest, and guest speaker, Tod Ewing, who will speak on "After the Election: Where Do We Go From Here?" Mr. Ewing is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of St. Cloud, Minnesota with over twenty-five years experience in diversity, race relations, conflict resolution and communication skill training. He is a national speaker on race relations and building models of cultural and racial unity and is a certified mediator.

Tickets are on sale at Book People of Moscow. Please buy in advance as breakfast sells out each year.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR ART & ESSAY CONTEST

The Latah County Human Rights Task Force is sponsoring a Martin Luther King Jr. Art & Essay Contest open to all Latah County k-12 students. Contest entries are due by January 9.  Contact Walter Hesford (hesford at uidaho.edu; 882-4599) to arrange to have them picked up, or send them to the Latah County Human Rights Task Force, P.O. Box 8613, Moscow, Idaho 83843. 
Contest winners will be notified by January 12 and recognized at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Breakfast, January 17.  They will receive a certificate of achievement and, through the generosity of the Idaho AARP, a $25.00 gift certificate for a book from Bookpeople of Moscow.  Junior and senior high contest winners will also be invited to attend a January 16th workshop given by Tod Ewing, this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Breakfast speaker. Questions for the contest are given below.

      Martin Luther King, Jr. 2009 Essay and Art Contest

 

One day after January 19th, this year's Martin Luther King Day, Barack Obama will become the first African-American president of the United States. The Latah County Human Rights Task Force invites students to reflect on this momentous event in art and essay.

 

                                      Art Subject for All Students

In a drawing, sculpture, collage, poem, or song, respond to the following:

                   Rosa sat so Martin could walk.

                             Martin walked so Obama could run.

                                       Obama ran so our children can fly.

 

                                Elementary Essay Subject 

Write a letter to Barack Obama, the new President of the United States, suggesting changes you think he should make to help promote human rights.

 

 

                            Junior and Senior High Essay Subject

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. worked throughout his life for human rights, social and economic justice, and world peace.  Imagine that you are Dr. King.  Write a letter to President Obama in which you reflect on the significance of his inauguration and recommend specific steps he take to bring about the conditions for which you worked.
