Celebrate Split Pea Soup
As the cold of autumn approaches, it's time to choose the comfort of split pea soup to feed the body, to warm the soul, and to celebrate National Split Pea Soup Week, November 12 through 18.
Since 1969, National Split Pea Soup Week has showcased one of the simplest, lowest-cost, and most nutritious foods available -- the humble split pea. The fertile agricultural region of northern Idaho and eastern Washington known as the Palouse has traditionally been the center of split pea production in the United States. The first annual National Split Pea Soup Week was officially proclaimed by Governors Don Samuelson of Idaho and Daniel J. Evans of Washington almost forty years ago.
Quick and easy to cook, split peas have an excellent nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and protein, split peas are hearty and nutritious. Used in recipes ranging from the everyday to the exotic, split peas are a natural addition to a healthy diet.
To help celebrate National Split Pea Soup Week, the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council provides free recipes, informative brochures, and even split pea trivia. This information is available from the Council headquarters at 2780 West Pullman Road in Moscow, Idaho, 83843, by telephone at 208-882-3023, by email at pulse at pea-lentil.com or at the Council website at www.pea-lentil.com. Copies of the Pea & Lentil Cookbook, from Everyday to Gourmet, are also available for sale.
