The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends March 30, 2007

Dear Friends,

This has been a week of outstanding student achievement at the University of
Idaho, and comes at an opportune time as today is Vandal Friday, in which
more than 1,000 new and potential students are in Moscow to register for
Fall classes and take care of final living and financial aid details. I take
great pride in sharing these stories of the ways in which our students excel
in, and are recognized for, their scholarly and research activities.

The 12 members of the University of Idaho Clean Snowmobile Competition Team
earned first place honors last weekend at the Society of Automotive
Engineers (SAE) Clean Snowmobile Challenge in Michigan. Our engineering
students re-engineered a stock snowmobile to reduce emissions and noise
while maintaining or enhancing performance. The Idaho team brought home
awards for best fuel economy; best handling; best design; best performance;
best value; best ride; best oral presentation; and best paper. The team
shared the Endurance Award with four other outstanding institutions by
completing the 100-mile endurance run. And there's more - team captain Nick
Harker stopped mid-race to extinguish a fire in a competitor's vehicle, and
the team was honored with the Founders Award for Most Sportsmanlike Conduct.

Also this week, Christopher M. Chandler, a junior studying dietetics in the
School of Family and Consumer Sciences, was selected to receive the
prestigious national Goldwater Scholarship; he is one of just 317 recipients
from the United States this year, selected on the basis of academic merit
from a field of 1,110 students who were nominated by college and university
faculties nationwide.

Goldwater Scholars are sophomores or juniors who plan to pursue graduate
studies in science, engineering or mathematics. They receive $7,500 a year
to complete their undergraduate studies. Chandler, from Absarokee, Montana,
is the University's 10th recipient in eight years of a Goldwater
Scholarship. Maryann K. Watkins, a junior from Idaho Falls studying
microbiology, also was recognized with an honorable mention.

Congratulations to all of these students and the faculty with whom they
work. They truly are among the best and brightest and most accomplished
students in the nation.

President

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

The 2007 Borah Symposium, "Women, War and Peace," is April 1-4, and it
addresses women's participation in the peacekeeping process. The symposium
features keynote speaker Mary Robinson, the first woman president of Ireland
and former U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights. Robinson's presentation
begins at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Student Union Building Ballroom. All Borah
Symposium events are free and open to the public. More information is
available at martin.uidaho.edu/borah.

The building that houses the Ethel Steel Women's Cooperative no longer will
be used as a residence hall after this academic year. The structure, built
in 1952, would require an estimated $1.2 to $2 million dollars for life
safety improvements and updates to continue use of the building as a
residence hall. Steel House is the oldest women's cooperative in the
country. Women living in Steel House share chores and receive reduced
housing rates in exchange. University Residences will work with the women
living in Steel House to determine if they would like to live together in
another residence hall facility.

Herbert Wickstrand attended the University of Idaho in the early '30s and
played on the Vandal basketball team. But the Great Depression was in full
swing and he had to quit school and go into the work force. Ultimately, Herb
enjoyed a highly successful career with Mutual Insurance Company of New
York. Ever a loyal Vandal, Herb and his wife, Loretta, created three
charitable remainder annuity trusts in the 1990s with appreciated securities
worth more than $500,000. Sadly, Herb died in 2002 and Loretta recently
passed away in Seattle. Their trusts will fund the Herbert L. Wickstrand
Curricular Enhancement Endowment in the College of Business and Economics.
We join the family in mourning their loss while celebrating the eminence of
Herb's and Loretta's lives; we are grateful for the generosity and vision of
these wonderful friends of the University of Idaho. If you would like learn
