U.S. deficit for first five months of 2007 is down 25.5 percent from a year
ago

The deficit for the first five months of the budget year is down sharply
from a year ago as the growth in government tax collections continues to
outpace growth in spending.

The Treasury Department reported that the deficit from October through
February totaled $162.2 billion, down 25.5 percent from the same period last
year.

That improvement came even though the deficit in February hit $120 billion,
up 0.6 percent from last February's deficit of $119.2 billion.

------------------------------------------------------------------

By quick glance of this article, one could be led to believe that the
national deficit is 25% lower than it was a year ago. Wrong.

What this article is saying is that during the period October 2006 thru
February 2007 the government spent 25.5 percent less than they did during
the period October 2005 thru February 2006.

Although the national deficit itself was not reduced by 25 percent, our
government is to be commended for spending money not as fast as they did a
year ago.

Let's take a look at the reduction in spending and the period in which this
reduction occurred. The period October 1, 2006 thru February 28, 2007
consists of 152 days. Twenty-five percent of those 152 days amounts to 39
days. Going back 39 days from February 28, 2007 puts the benchmark at
January 20, 2007, or 16 days after the new Democratic-majority Congress was
sworn in.

You are not likely to read it in the BLog. So, I will say it here:

On behalf of the US tax-paying public; Thank you, Speaker of the House Nancy
Pelosi. Keep up the good fight.
