Hilton says she won't appeal

Paris Hilton said Saturday she was "learning and growing" from her time
behind bars and will not appeal her 45-day jail sentence for a probation
violation in a reckless driving case.

The hotel heiress was at a maximum-security detention center, where she was
believed to have undergone medical and psychiatric evaluations to determine
the best jail to keep her in.

"Being in jail is by far the hardest thing I have ever done," Hilton said in
a statement released by her lawyer, Richard A. Hutton. "During the past
several days, I have had a lot of time to think and I believe that I am
learning and growing from this experience."

Hilton, in tears and screaming for her mother, was taken to the downtown
Twin Towers detention center Friday after a judge ordered her back to jail,
ending her brief stint under house arrest.

Hilton's lawyers sought to keep her out of jail on grounds that the
26-year-old was suffering an unspecified medical condition.

It is refreshing to see, in the case of Paris Hilton, that at least one
judge feels that the law applies equally to everyone.

And now, from the solitude of her new 8 by 12 home, perhaps she will have
time to reflect on her mistakes as she ponders the words of an old Bobby
Fuller Four classic . . .

"I Fought the Law and the Law Won"

As time washes away the memories of one judge in Los Angeles County who, on
a national stage, applied the law equally, regardless of fame and fortune,
the court system will return to "business as usual. The Robert Blakes and
Michael Jacksons of the world will be treated with special care under a
separate, less responsible, system. Somehow, though, I feel we can all
assume some degree of "equal justice under the law" as we recall those
surprisingly adequate words of Humphrey Bogart . . .

"We'll always have Paris."
