The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends June 8, 2007

Dear Friends,

The University of Idaho's Strategic Action Plan calls for enhanced
relationships between Native American tribal nations and the University
community. We have made significant progress in addressing those goals with
the recent key hiring of a tribal liaison and a director for our Native
American Student Center.

Arthur M. Taylor, who currently serves as assistant director of
multicultural student programs and services at the University of Notre Dame,
will join the University in August as our new tribal liaison. He will work
to develop stronger relationships, enhanced communication and increased
collaboration on projects shared by the University of Idaho and Native
American tribes. Arthur, who is a Nez Perce tribal member, also will work
collaboratively with members of the University community to create effective
services for recruiting and retaining Native American students.

Supporting and guiding Native American students at the University of Idaho
will be the focal point for Steven Martin, our new director of the Native
American Student Center. Steve, a Muskogee Creek tribal member, will develop
and oversee academic and personal development programs for Native American
students, including education and career planning, transition assistance and
coordinating cultural activities. He takes up his post on July 2. Steve
currently is the Native American student adviser with South Dakota State
University's Office of Multicultural Affairs.

The University of Idaho is poised to make a greater impact on the
opportunities and successes possible for Native American students and
enriching the university community at large. We welcome Arthur and Steve,
and the passion they bring to improve the lives of people in Idaho and
around the world.

Tim White
President

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

Michele Reba, a civil engineering graduate student studying snow melt, has
been awarded a DeVlieg Education Enhancement Award and a College of Graduate
Studies Doctoral Research Fellowship. Both awards will support her
dissertation project focused on the influence canopy and atmospheric
interactions have on snow melt. In May, Reba traveled to Helsinki, Finland,
to study geophysical fluid dynamics. Following the course, she'll visit
England to present an invited lecture at the University of Reading
Environmental Systems Science Centre. She also will study ecological
sustainability in Venice, Italy, at the Istituto Veneto de Science, Lettere

After graduating from the University of Idaho, Chester (Chet) '30 and Violet
Bohman '31 Whittaker moved to Florida to join several other Idaho graduates
to run the Winn-Dixie grocery chain. Chet rose to the position of vice
president of the company. He passed away in 2002, and Vi continues to make
her home in Jacksonville, Florida. Last year, Vi, her daughter, Ruth Lynn
Phillips, and other family members toured the Mary Hall Niccolls Building
that houses the School of Family and Consumer Science. After seeing first
hand the need to update the labs and classrooms in the building, Violet made
a commitment of $50,000 to the project. "The School of Family and Consumer
Sciences has excellent faculty, but in order for students to be better
prepared as they leave the University of Idaho, they must have modern
facilities in which to learn," Violet said. The $5 million dollar renovation
of the Niccolls Building will include a new, state-of-the-art food and
nutrition laboratory, child developme nt laboratory and several updated
classrooms. To learn more about giving to the Niccolls Remodel Project or
other programs in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, contact
Mary Hasenoehrl at (208) 885-6681 or mhaseno at uidaho.edu.
