Joe,

I agree that Hamilton had forfeited his right to own firearms due to his
criminal actions.  But it seems he slipped through the cracks, or was
somehow allowed by some legal technicality to possess them.  

I think we can also agree that we have plenty of laws on the books; they
just need to be more rigorously enforced.  More laws just muddies the
waters.
