[Vision2020] George W Told the Nation

Not even Ronald Reagan, one of my least favorite presidents, had the temerity to silence Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, a committed and conservative Christian who angered his "base" by suggesting, of all things, that condom use could keep people alive while describing in graphic and absolutely necessary terms what HIV was and how it could be contracted. Perhaps Reagan lacked the guts to try; I have a sense that one could not easily neuter C. Everett Koop by telling him what he could and couldn't say. It appears that even Reagan had more of a moral compass when it came to public health than our current "Christian" president, who not only insists that he be the focus of virtually every announcement from the Office of the Surgeon General but who also has a "facts-be-damned" approach to sexuality, drug use, and public health. If this placates his own Religious Right base, that base deserves to be ignored by the next occupant of the White House. Beliefs that require their adherents to misrepresent science, make up data, and otherwise lie in attempting to convince the rest of the world that they're true are beliefs that may or may not themselves deserve scrutiny. The liars, however, deserve nothing but scorn, especially if they appeal elsewhere to the veracity of the Scriptures or the truth claims of their faith in their engagement with non-believers.Former Surgeon General Dr. Carmona should've developed a Koop-like backbone, but in an administration not generally regarded as truthful or candid, he was one of many easily consumed fish swimming in a tankful of Cheneys, Rummies, Rices, Hagers, and a frat boy named W. Our loss, but then again -- those who most needed straight information from the SG's office are hardly a potent political force, are they?keely"And these women that you spit on as they try to change their worlds/Are immune to your consultations . . . they're quite aware of what they're going through"(With apologies to David Bowie)> From: carlwestberg846 at hotmail.com> To: vision2020 at moscow.com> Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2007 17:15:10 -0700> Subject: Re: [Vision2020] George W Told the Nation> > Pat, as a defender of The Current Occupant, a question not about Iraq.
