[Vision2020] to Tony and Heirdoug

Sorry, Tony, but your response gets to be shared with mine to Heirdoug.
It is this: Your son's experience was awful and it shouldn't have happened.
One lapse of common sense and backbone from the school should not only be
correctable, but ought not contaminate your overall view of public schools.
The fact that your son's experience was an anomaly proves, I think, that the
foundation is solid. Not perfect, but solid enough to warrant the fixing,
the investment, that public support provides.
As for Heirdoug's assertion that I lie: Oh, well. Wilson himself has said
he can't rule out that the congregation of Christ Church has prayed
imprecatorily against public schools, and I'm guessing that it won't matter
to Heirdoug anyway.
Nothing else Heirdoug says makes any difference to me one way or the other,
but I do appreciate Tony's attempt, below, to engage in real discussion.

Keely, let me give you one example of the type of thing which has many
concerned about public schools verses private schools. My oldest attended
private school through 8th grade with the exception of third grade, which he
spent in public school. He is an impeccable speller, an ability I certainly
envy, and has placed well at several bees. As a result, he had no trouble
whatever with his third grade spelling list, getting repeated 100's, and
asked his teacher if he could get a list tailored to his advanced ability.
The teacher was cooperative and complied immediately. Unfortunately, some
other parent contacted the school staff in a snit that my son was getting a
special spelling list. The outrage, huh? Instead of telling the parent
that such was the case because it was necessary in some cases to alter
material to fit the individual abilities of students and that the students
teacher was the best judge of when this was necessary, the school
immediately denied my son his more challenging list of words and had him
return to non-learning.
Try to fathom, Keely, how parents who oppose such stupidity could be
motivated by something other than ignorance, hate or religious fervor.
