The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends Jan. 12, 2007
Dear Friends,
2007 marks the College of Engineering's centennial. For 100 years, the
college and its more than 13,000 alumni have produced innovations that
impact society and expand intellectual boundaries - not just in Idaho, but
around the globe and into space.
The University's biodiesel program, one of the first in the nation, is
providing environmentally friendly biofuels - research that impacts
transportation worldwide. NASA research in space will expand to new
frontiers thanks to technology from the University of Idaho that helps
create low-power technologies for spacecraft electronics. And the combine
leveler, developed by Ray Hanson '45, revolutionized farming practices on
the rolling hills of the Palouse and around the world.
Our University is so very proud of the college's century of accomplishments,
and the astonishing reach of those efforts; engineering alumni currently
work in nearly 70 countries that span six continents. Next week, we launch a
year of celebrations to commemorate this milestone. See below for event
details. For more information about the College of Engineering and its
current research, visit www.engr.uidaho.edu.
Our anticipation of centennial festivities is tempered today by a series of
sad and difficult events within our community. The University mourns the
death in a vehicle accident of freshman and spirit squad member Angelina
Cabrera of Payette; a campus memorial is being planned for next week. And we
send heartfelt hopes and prayers to the families of recently retired
Emeritus Professor of Computer Science John Dickinson, who remains missing
and presumed lost following a traffic accident in Oregon, and Idaho State
Trooper Christopher Glenn '97 who recently was seriously injured in the line
of duty in Twin Falls.
Tim White
President
