Perhaps there is no scientific explanation of this given current science,
but other explanations than consciousness or a soul existing or co-existing
with/within an unconscious brain are possible.

This could simply be the perceptions of others in the operating
room(assuming there is no possible way the person could have perceived the
operating room, and those in it, or read or had someone give them a
description, before they gave their account that appears to demonstrate
they, or some part of them, was conscious while being "unconscious") being
somehow communicated paranormally to the person who later awoke from a "near
death" experience, after they awoke. This explanation is certainly no more
fantastic or improbable than the assumption of "life" after death.
