I'm going to have to confess to being divided about Kwanzaa. On the
plus side, I am virtually guaranteed to like anything that Robert
Anthony "Tony" Snow doesn't, and Snow hates Kwanzaa. On the negative
side, principle #1 of Kwanzaa I find disturbing (at least in part):

1. To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community,
nation and race.

Family? Absolutely. Community? Sure. Nation? Oh oh -- jingoism
alert. Race? Maintaining unity in race is racism. Yuck.

I don't care about Karenga's socialism, nor about any alleged
subversion of/detraction from Christmas, but nationalism and racism
give me reason to pause. Unless, of course, the stated principles of
Kwanzaa don't have anything to do with the way that it is actually
celebrated, which is likely the case. Remember, the dim protest the
celebration of Halloween (which means that Snow is probably in the
anti-Halloween camp)...

It's decided, then. Yay for Kwanzaa!
