I agree with Donovan that character matters in choosing a president. Where he and I differ is on the idea that the Republican Party has evinced "core values" of respect for God, religion, fidelity, and proper treatment of other people.
Whatever the foibles of the Democrats -- and there are many -- I see a field of people who are speaking about poverty, education, health care and restoring America's fallen stature in the world. I don't see Karl Rove-like figures behind any of them recruiting naive conservatives to, in the name of Jesus, become whorish in their allegiance to their party. And, if it matters at all, the top contenders each have been married once. It may not be the mark of sterling character some would have it be, but it's a little hard to argue against that in defending
. . . what were they called? "Core values" of "family" and "fidelity"?
I'm just so grateful to see serious candidates for national office speaking about working to eradicate poverty and
equip disenfranchised peoples' sense of having a stake in their own country. People who lament a "turning away" from the religious underpinnings of our nation would make an enormous contribution by recognizing God's special concern for the poor and actually doing something about it, rather than panicking over who says the benediction in front of Congress. Religiosity, especially of the civic kind, doesn't impress God. Righteousness does, and concern for the poor is indisputably a hallmark of true religion.

"Patriarchy and its abuses, including the alienation of woman and man from each other, resulted from the material demands of life outside of the Creator's abundance, a state God never intended human beings to experience in the first place ... Redemption means turning over the order of things in the fallen world."

Tom, How Rudy views his oath to his wives and his oath to his religion is of great importance in determining how he will treat his future oath as President of the country. If he wishes to win the Republican nomination for President, he must show a commitment to the core values of the party, which include, family values, respect for God, religion, fidelity, and proper treatment of other people. If Rudy didn't want his personal life and divorce on display and up for debate and inclusion in our decision to select him for the most important position in the world, then maybe he should have not held a publicly televised conference to announce his intentions of divorce, and second, maybe he should have stayed in the Democratic Party where his behavior and mistreatment of those he is suppose to love appeals to people like you.
I think content of character is a big concern in seeking a person to fill the position of President. Best, Donovan

Arnold’s claim would contain some substance of validity if Giuliani were running for pope. However, Giuliani is not running for pope. Although, under the Bush administration I can understand the confusion. Bush isn’t pope, yet he thinks he is. As Giuliani is running for a political office, how the Christian church views Giuliani’s current and past marriages is really a moot matter now isn’t it, Arnold? Seeya round town, Moscow.

Tim Rigsby is an idiot not able to understand the distinction, or is there another reason for his post besides giving us another illustration why the public educational system is failing? Best, Donovan =======================================================
