[Vision2020] Joe LIKES Bananas

You see, Deacon, all of this, while somewhat well-written and certainly
better punctuated than most missives from your buddies at the fieldhouse,
begs the question -- why do you insist on what could only be politely
described as "Joe 'n sports spam" when the rest of us are discussing things
that have nothing to do with sports.

Granted, "Joe" is a far more common name than, say, "Deacon" or "Keely," but
if people started scattering utterly irrelevant factoids about Deacon Jones
or Keely Smith throughout the forum, I'm sure you and I would figure out
that it's about us.

I don't buy that you just have a need to spew sports crap out of your
keyboard and hope only to have an eager audience in Visionland. Here's a
hint about what I do think: see if there's a sports team somewhere called
the Skylarks. I'm sure it'll ring a bell.

You and the other wee little men of the Kirk never cease to amaze me, but
I'm about at the end of my quotient of annoyance for your style of
rollicking good times. Grow up and wade into the fray with honesty, or kick
back with an oatmeal stout and read "Who's Who In Baseball" 'til your eyes
cross. But drop the Eddie Haskell "golly, Mr. Cleaver" bit. You lack the
winsomeness to pull it off.

Joe,

Neither of those Joes was referring to you. Go back and read more than the
subject. Both of those guys had been long done with baseball before you were
even a glimmer in your Ph.D.'s eye.

The first was about Joseph Earl Campbell, who only played in one major
league game (May 3, 1967), but struck out in every one of his at-bats. Hence
the title, "Joe Campbell Strikes Out". Maybe I should have been more
specific and included the middle name. After all, Joseph Earl Campbell is
most certainly not you.

The second was about Joseph Benes, whom his teammates nicknamed "Bananas",
and who played in 1931. That is where the subject came from. I was going to
say "Joe Is Bananas", but I thought it was funnier to say that this guy (who
is most certainly NOT you) was going crazy. Obviously there was confusion;
perhaps I should have been more specific and included the last name, but I
thought that including his nickname -- what he is most known for -- would
have been enough.

However, you're right. Nobody buys it when you just play dumb. As you put
it, "We can all see right through that crap." When I think that, "It's all
about the code" and "It's a biased, pro-Walmart presentation (but I'm not
going to tell you why)" inexplicably pop into my head.

I still don't know where all of the "snotty, rude, insulting remarks made
toward liberals" are to be found, or why I deserved a "He started it", but
it's OK. I've come to realize that when you get worked up thinking your
pride is under fire, you say things you don't really mean.

And really, even if I were implying that you strike out or are going crazy
(which, of course, I most certainly wasn't), you would think that a grown
man, especially one as educated and prestigious as yourself, could handle a
bit of ribbing.

All in good fun,

Deacon
