[Vision2020] anyone? anyone?

Thank you, Larson, for writing. I can appreciate your busy schedule and am
content to just answer you here, although my offer is always open (and
sincere).

I'm glad to hear you don't have "thought police"! On the other hand, in the
churches I've been involved in -- and I've been involved in evangelical
Christian churches for 24 years or so -- we have pastors who don't teach
errors of the sort that I believe you have; if they do, and if they don't
respond to my please from Scripture, I leave and usually on friendly terms.
On the other hand, how my former pastors and elders would handle error in
the blogosphere from their congregants, I would imagine that if it were
pointed out, they would handle it just as they would error in a
congregant-led Bible study, prayer group, or parachurch ministry. And they
would do it as a kindness, as well as a part of their job of lovingly
shepherding the community.

The fact is, your elders quite often read Vision, and the silence has been
deafening. Not that my question was earth-shattering in importance, or that
they owe me an answer -- but I know that if my pastor had a congregant and a
student in his college who publicly taught error, he would lovingly, gently,
and with open Bible try to lead him or her in a more correct understanding.
Unless he agreed -- then, if the teaching were so distasteful and so
Biblically indefensible as to cause chagrin or embarrassment or incredulity
in the larger community, he could, I suppose, just let his silence do the
talking.

I wouldn't expect that of my pastor, and if that's the case with yours and
your elders, I'm truly sorry -- sorry for the silence, and even more sorry
for the teaching.

I wish you the best with your studies.

keely

Keely,

I'd love to get a chance to talk w/you some time, maybe via email, but right
now isn't a great time. I'm taking 4 classes right now, have finals this
week, work 3/4 time, play rugby, and have a wife and kids to spend time
with. My wife absolutely hates it when I waste time blogging or arguing on
V2020, so I don't do it very often.

As for the elders getting back to you - I think you would have to get in
touch with them first for them to get back to you. I don't think comments
on V2020 count. For me, I check V2020 maybe once a week and I'm positive
most of our elders don't have nearly as much free time as I do. But, feel
free to contact our church office -208.882.2034 if you'd like to ask my
pastor to react to me and my brother's blog.

I will say that my church would never discipline me for my views on
gender-roles unless it was leading me into some grievous sin. I'm not sure
how the churches you've been involved with work, but Christ Chruch doesn't
monitor our every action and conversation like J Ford.

Also, just so you know, Weston doesn't live in Moscow or go to Christ
Church, never has. He and his family are down in Austin - so, you'd have to
contact his Pastor at Redeemer Presbyterian there (but I get the feeling
that they don't have any Thought Police there either, sorry).

Thanks for reading the blog. Feel free to leave comments, maybe we can hash
it out there.

Cheers,
Larson
