The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends Nov. 10, 2006

Dear Friends,

The University of Idaho continues to impact the development and production
of alternative fuels. On Wednesday, Idaho plant breeder Jack Brown and
Gibraltar-based Eco-Energy Ltd. announced a research project to develop
high-value oilseed crops worldwide for alternative fuel production. The
agreement brings $2 million in research funding to the University during the
next five years.

Brown has developed mustard, canola and rapeseed varieties adapted to the
Pacific Northwest and other U.S. regions. Now, he and his research team will
develop new high oil yield varieties tailored to adapt to worldwide climatic
and environmental conditions. The oil produced from these crops will have
specific characteristics suitable for making the highest quality biofuel.

Eco-Energy Ltd. aims to become one of the leading suppliers in the global
biodiesel market. The company plans to contribute to the Third World's
economic growth and welfare through oilseed production for biodiesel. The
company has established offices in South America, Europe and China.

We are immensely proud of the accomplishments of our agricultural
researchers. They are establishing the University of Idaho as a global
leader in renewable fuels, and we look forward to the new discoveries that
this agreement will fuel.

I congratulate College of Law Dean Don Burnett who received the Idaho State
Bar's 2006 Professionalism Award. The award recognizes lawyers who have
demonstrated an uncommon devotion to public service, the improvement of the
administration of justice and a career-long practice of civility, integrity
and dignity. It is one of the highest honors any lawyer might receive during
his or her career. I have long recognized those qualities in Dean Burnett,
and appreciate the impact they have on our students, faculty and staff.

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

Sarah Heath Palin '87 was elected governor of Alaska in Tuesday's election.
She will be the first woman to serve as Alaska's governor. Palin earned a
journalism degree from Idaho, and worked in media and the utilities industry
before beginning her public service. She was elected to two terms on the
Wasilla City Council, and then served two terms as the mayor/manager of
Alaska's fastest growing community.

Robert Wrigley, professor of English and director of the graduate Creative
Writing program, was featured on the Nov. 6 broadcast of "The NewsHour with
Jim Lehrer" on PBS. Wrigley read his poem, "Partisan." You can view the news

Dan '72 and Anne '73 (Murphy) Alsaker recently made two generous gifts to
the College of Business and Economics. The first gift will help the college
finish the J.A. Albertson Building Campaign and the second will fund the
first year of the Alsaker Family Faculty Fellowships for outstanding CBE
professors. Dan is president of The Broadway Group, a family owned and
family-run organization that soon will celebrate its 44th year in business.
The Broadway Group operates truck stops, restaurants and casinos throughout
Washington, Montana, Nevada and Iowa with more than 400 employees. Dean Jack
Morris said, "Dan's generous gifts will help the college in many ways-and
most importantly will help the college retain top faculty and recruit
competitively-we are very grateful." The University of Idaho has played a
role in the lives of Dan, his wife, Anne, and Dan's sister, Pam Hemingway
'75-all of whom have contributed to the success of the business.

Alsaker said, "Idaho taught me a unique way to make a difference in business
and politics. My professional life is a reflection of that learning
experience." To learn more about giving to the College of Business, contact
