I belittled the messenger?

The soldiers are the instrument of politics, so that is a difficult
separation to make. Further, I consider such a separation dishonest,
and I value honesty more than any other virtue.

Soldiers are not a special class of people. Of course I hope that
this brutality did not occur, but at this time that seems a vain hope.
If details emerge that exonerate our soldiers, then their families
will understandably smile and weep for joy, but it will not bring back
the dead, and it is for the dead that I mourn, not the reputations of
volunteers.
