I concur regarding "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay," but
I haven't heard of the book by Yagyo Munenori. I'll add it to my
reading list. Thank you for the recommendation!

P.S. Did you know that "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay"
is being turned into a film, directed by Stephen Daldry, who also
directed Billy Elliot?
Chabon is also writing a screenplay for a movie with this plot outline
(from imdb.com):
***
A retelling of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" set in British
colonial China, where Shaolin monks take in a refuge girl.
