>From today's (June 13, 2006) Moscow-Pullman Daily News with a special thanks
to Diane French.
I'm sure that everybody knows, or remembers, Diane French from the Thompson
Rezone Hearing.
You say you don't?
Maybe this will remind you:

Water facts were accurate
Steve Peterson, a University of Idaho lecturer in economics and statistical
information, disputes one of the numbers used by Mark Solomon in his Town
Crier II column (Daily News, June 7). He says the proposed Thompson
development will not consume 62 million gallons per year as Solomon wrote. I
suggest Peterson check his facts by reading the Thompson developer's
application to the city of Moscow. On Page 6 of the application, submitted
Jan. 25, it clearly states the development, if built out to the maximum
density allowed by the rezone, would consume 170,100 gallons per day.
171,000 gallons per day times 365 days per year equals 62.415 million
gallons per year - the number Solomon correctly used.
Further, Solomon made no claim regarding projected water use for a Wal-Mart
Supercenter. Peterson claims that it would use little more water than the
existing Wal-Mart. Again, he should check his facts. A super center includes
a grocery store which has a much larger water demand than a retail store. A
city of Santa Fe, N.M., study of actual water use by different types of
commercial developments in their city reveals that grocery stores use 83
percent more water than big box retail stores such as the existing Wal-Mart.
Solomon never said that development should not occur in Moscow. He made a
well-reasoned argument for creating a city water conservation program to
find us "new" water to support Moscow's growth.
