Chasuk is correct, Ted. New blog; new rules. The rules won't suit
everyone, but they will apply to everyone. One of the reasons that
Chasuk and I will be co-moderating is so that we can mind each other if
either of us gets out of hand. I can remind him if he's popping over
the posting limit, and he can tell me I'm being an awful crab's ass.
If you want Liberal as in libertarian, then you've already got it righ
here; the speech on Vision 2020 is about as free as it gets. You take
the good with the bad and the ugly. We're aiming to create a somewhat
different space on the Liberal Moscow blog, and we're creating it in
response to an oft-stated desire by many members of this list for a
return to real topics, real issues, and some semblance of civility
without the stifling of disagreement. As I said in my earlier post,
we're not out to supplant Vision 2020 but to offer another (safer)
space for dialog. This, we believe, requires moderators; and, in our
case, we'll be moderators who willingly subject our actions to the
scrutiny of blog members.
Participation in Liberal Moscow does not preclude participation in
Vision 2020. I would be very sad if it did. But I'm reminded of a
line from Terry Pratchett's Thud! The City Watch of Ank-Morpok is
hiring its first vampire officer. A crowd has gathered outside the
station to protest, waving signs that say "Bloodsuckers Out" and "No
Fangs." They're verging on a riot. There to record the event is the
vampire photographer, Otto Chriek, who is called upon to defend the
freedom of the press. Commander Vimes of the City Watch objects:
"Freedom to pour oil on a flame, do you mean?" Otto replies, "Zat's
freedom for you. No one said it vas nice."
There you have it. Some have said that true freedom would be so
terrifying that only the divine or lunatics could cope with it. I'll
be sorry not to have you participate on Liberal Moscow as you
participate over here, Ted. I'm not on Vision 2020 very much these
days, and I do enjoy your posts. I would ask you to reconsider as I
know you consider things very carefully. Do think about it. Jane
Siberry would want you to . . .
Okay, that was a low blow! What would Jane Siberry do? It ought to be
a bumper sticker.
