Social Culture and High-Tech Economic Development: The Technopolis
Columns.
By Fred Phillips. Palgrave (2006). Hardback, ISBN 1403999511, 304 Pages,
£55.00.
Communities around the world are trying to duplicate the Silicon Valley
phenomenon, and for an excellent reason. Techno-regions have generated most
of
the new jobs in the past decade and this technology is driving economic
development. However, problems persist. This book highlights the potential
pitfalls and suggests methods by which a sustainable, distinctive and
prosperous technology-based regional economy can exist.
Fred Phillips lived in Austin and Portland, playing leading roles in
the
growth of both technopoleis and consulting worldwide on technopolis
formation
and new business incubation. He is now Professor of Entrepreneurship at
Maastricht School of Management and a Senior Fellow of the IC2 Institute at
University of Texas at Austin. He is author of Market-Oriented Technology
Management: Innovating for Profit in Entrepreneurial Times.
