The Friday Letter
A Newsletter for University of Idaho Alumni and Friends July 21, 2006

Dear Friends,

The Vandal Scholarship Fund's annual Governor's Gala will be held in Boise
on Aug. 3. In addition to raising funds for scholarships for our
student-athletes, we also will celebrate the success of Vandal Jim Risch
'65, '68, who became Idaho's 31st governor in May. I'm sure Gov. Risch will
bring the same energy and excitement to the Gala as he has brought to the
governor's office.

The event, at the Boise Centre on the Grove, features dinner and exciting
live and silent auction on items that include fly-aways to Vandal football
games, silver and gold-themed home items, golf packages and Vandal gear. The
funds raised will support University of Idaho student-athlete scholarships
and the Ada County Alumni Chapter Scholarship. Today is the deadline for
purchasing tickets, which are $100 per person, of which $50 is tax
deductible.
For tickets or more information, contact the Vandal Scholarship Fund office
at (208) 364-4027.

Tim White
President

Here's the latest news from the University of Idaho:

NASA research in space will expand to new frontiers thanks to new low-power
electronics technology from the University of Idaho. Orbiting
micro-satellites, known as Space Technology 5 (ST5), have completed a
successful three-month mission with the assistance of the University's
Center for Advanced Microelectronics Biomolecular Research (CAMBR). Members
of CAMBR provided three ultra low power processors that operate at markedly
lower voltage than current microprocessors - 0.5 volts compared to three to
five volts, which dramatically reduces satellite power demands. "The ST-5
experiment demonstrates that this revolutionary technology is viable. The
CAMBR team was able to accomplish a feat many thought was impossible," said
Gary Maki, CAMBR director and faculty researcher. "I am very proud of the
diligent efforts of the CAMBR team as we try to create technology which has
national impacts."

Join Idaho alumni and friends Wednesday, July 26 at the Sonoma County Fair
in Santa Rosa, Calif. Idaho Gem, one of the University of Idaho's
world-famous racing mules, is scheduled to compete in the inaugural running
of the Sonoma County Trailblazers Mule Futurity. Racing starts at 12:45 p.m.
and post time for the futurity is expected to be at 1 to 1:15 p.m. A social
gathering is planned in the VIP courtyard of the Fairgrounds Office at 3
p.m. with Idaho alumni Dr. Gordon Woods, the lead veterinary scientist on
the mule cloning project, and Dr. Dirk Vanderwall, an international expert
on equine cloning.

The reception is complimentary with beverages available for purchase. Bring

A couple of Vandals from the 60s are challenging other Vandals to step up
and contribute $25,000 in support of Operation Education at the University
of Idaho.

The challengers, who wish to remain anonymous, will match all gifts
dollar-for-dollar. Operation Education is a pioneering scholarship program
designed to help veterans who have been severely and permanently wounded as
a result of service since Sept. 11, 2001, further their education. The
University of Idaho will provide financial support and resources to assist
veterans and their families as they re-enter civilian life. The spouses of
wounded veterans are also eligible for the scholarship. It is the first
such program in the nation. Contributions to Operation Education can be
made online at www.uidaho.edu/give or sent to the University of Idaho
Foundation, P.O. Box 443147, Moscow, ID 83844-3147. If you have questions,
please call Jennie Hall at (208) 885-5013 or jenniej at uidaho.edu. The
challenge ends Dec. 31, 2006.

Take care, Moscow (you, too, Vandals).
