For those of you who still use obsolete information technology (books), may
I recommend the following:
Wal-Mart : the face of twenty-first-century capitalism /
New York : New Press : Distributed by W.W. Norton, c2006
The UI Library has three copies under the call number:
HF5429.215.U6W35 2006
It's a volume compiled from a conference in California at the time of the
strikes against the grocery stores who were attempting to cut wages and
benefits to compete against the anticipated Super Centers. The papers are
uneven and from different perspectives (as conferences tend to be), but
there's some great information contained therein. Examples:
A history of retailing-- grocery store chains were fought because they put
"Mom and Pop" groceries out of business.
How the social conditions of Arkansas formed the corporate culture of
Wal-Mart-- male managers & female workers.
The amazing technology of Wal-Mart retailing, ahd how they use information
technology, satellites, and smart tags to cut the price of logistics, and
how that technology is standardizing manufacturing & retailing.
Why Wal-Mart likes Super Centers-- sales of general merchandise increases
30% over stores that don't sell groceries.
Why Wal-Mart will sell half the groceries in the country by 2008.
Why Wal-Mart accounted for 25% of the productivity improvement in the last
ten years, and why inflation has been so low during that period.
