Smart Growth Leader To Speak on Wal-Mart Plan
The Moscow Civic Association (MCA) is sponsoring a free public forum on Monday, February 13, at 7 pm, at the 1912 Center in Moscow with smart growth expert Jon Barrett discussing the proposed Super Wal-Mart in Moscow. Barrett's presentation will be followed by audience questions.
Jon Barrett, of Boise, is the co-director of Idaho Smart Growth, a non-profit organization dedicated to stopping sprawl and advancing smart growth principles. Smart growth is a national planning movement that focuses on the patterns in which we build our communities. It encourages the development of walkable compact neighborhoods located in proximity to commercial services, schools, protected green space and recreational opportunities, public transportation, and employment centers so that trips can be conveniently made by a variety of means including public transit, foot, bicycle and car.
Barrett worked in community planning and growth management for more than 10 years as a city planner and a private sector consultant after earning a bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from Washington State University in 1986. He joined Idaho Smart Growth (www.idahosmartgrowth.org) in October 1997.
The Moscow Civic Association is a non-profit citizen's organization that strives to improve the quality of life for Moscow residents. The mission of Moscow Civic Association is to inform community members about important local issues and encourage civic participation.
