Benefit Dance Announced for Africa Bicycle Project

The Village Bicycle Project, a Moscow-based non-profit organization that has delivered 11,000 bicycles to Africa, is sponsoring a benefit dance featuring African music at Moscow's American Legion cabin beginning at 7pm on Saturday, January 21. The celebration, labeled "Think Globally, Dance Locally," will also include a silent auction, a brief update on the bicycle project, and food, beverages and desserts for sale.

There will be no charge to attend the dance, though donations will be accepted, explained Dave Peckham, project founder and coordinator.

The Village Bicycle Project was established in 1999 to bring bicycles to the West African country of Ghana, to provide affordable transportation for people there. The project has gathered 11,000 used bicycles from Moscow/Pullman, Seattle, and other American cities and sent them to Ghana in shipping containers on ocean-going freighters. In Ghana, the project trains local people to maintain and repair the bikes. About 2,000 Africans have been trained in bike repair through the project.

The goal of this Moscow dance event is to raise $2,000 of the $25,000 needed to complete 50 bike maintenance workshops in Ghana to train another 1,000 people during 2006, Peckham said.

The dance music will be provided by DJ's playing the irresistible beat of recorded African music and by UI ZimMarimba, a Moscow-based marimba band. The dance will be at the American Legion Hall, located at 317 South Howard Street, Moscow.

The silent auction items include collectible bicycles, African crafts, goods and services from local merchants and businesses, and many other items. Those who want to donate to the auction should contact Kelly Riley at 208-835-4643, or email riley.ncfarm at tds.net
