One small observation. The "savings rate" as defined doesn't include capital
gains. You may have been getting rich off your Google stock or seen your
house triple in price (California), but this doesn't show up as "savings".
If you spend this wealth, however, it shows up as "negative savings"--
expenditures exceeding "savings"-- money placed in savings accounts, bonds,
etc., investments that don't even outpace inflation.
