In Beirut, the leader of Lebanon's Shi'ite Hizbollah said the row would
never had occurred if a 17-year-old death edict against British writer
Salman Rushdie been carried out.
A dozen Palestinian gunmen surrounded European Union offices in the Gaza
Strip demanding an apology for the cartoons, one of which shows Islam's
founder wearing a bomb-shaped turban. Muslims consider any images of
Mohammad to be blasphemous.
Palestinian gunmen kidnapped and later released a German from a hotel in the
West Bank city of Nablus, witnesses said.
Earlier, al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades threatened at a news conference to kidnap
citizens of France, Denmark and Norway if they did not leave Nablus within
72 hours. Newspapers in Germany and Spain have also reprinted the
caricatures.

I read this stuff and then think to myself, how can any thinking person say
that Iraq is radicalizing these guys? Heck, they are and have been this
radical for ages. They have been murdering people in the name of their
religous faith, blowing people up with car bombs and people bombs, murdering
kids in schools and condemning writers to death for decades.
Islamic terorists and jihadists murdered 250,000 people in East Timor in the
1990's. They have killed a similar quarter of a million people in Dafur
this last year. To me thats pretty freaking radical. Add in all the
deaths in insurgency for radical Islam in the Philippines that have gone on
since 1945. Iraq is small potatoes, with the major difference between it
all that this time we are involved.
Read what the 10%, the Islamic radicals are calling for. They are seeking
Islamic law in all place that Islam controlled. That has to include all of
the Balkans, Spain, Sicily and a lot of Northern Africa and most of Western
Africa. They also want special status in all countries where they have a
significant presence, including Europe and the United States. They were
seeking that kind of Pan-Islamic World Empire long before there was an Iraqi
war and they were training the generation that is blowing itself to bits
long before we arrived.
We are not increasing their numbers, they were flat out there. We had only
been lucky enough to not draw their fire prior to 2001 in any significant
way. But you are foolish if you think that they would withhold attacking
America, because to them we are the Great Satan, the very essence of what is
wrong with the world.
This is not a replay of the Cold War. These are not peasant reformers
seeking egalitarian reforms in their countries against the big bad
imperialists. Their complaint is not that we are over there, its that we
exist, that the West is the dominate economic and social power and that our
subtle influence in movies and music and culture is an assault on their
religion and their belief in its truth.
