I don't know that there is any one answer to that question.  Briefly,
there is Orthodox Judaism, Conservative Judaism, Reform Judaism,
Reconstructionist Judaism, the Jewish Renewal folks, Humanistic
Judaism, members of the Union for Traditional Judaism, Sephardic and
Mizrahi Judaism, Karaite Judaism, the Samaritans, and non-Jews who
nonetheless call themselves Messianic Jews.

The list above doesn't even include any of the subdivisions.

If Phil were still living, and Joan were still contributing, they
would have likely given different (perhaps even opposing) answers.
