Arizona State hiring Erickson as coach

Dennis Erickson is on the verge of becoming the 22nd head football coach at
Arizona State University. An ASU official indicated on Saturday that
negotiations between Erickson and the school are continuing. 
 
A source close to the football program told the Tribune that a deal will be
reached, and that some of Erickson's assistant coaches have already been
determined. 

The 59-year-old Erickson is a two-time national championship-winning coach
at the University of Miami who has also coached at Wyoming, Washington
State, Oregon State and the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers.
In 2006, he returned to where his college head-coaching career began, Idaho,
and led the Vandals to a 4-8 record.

Erickson - who is 149-64-1 in 18 college seasons, including national titles
in 1989 and '91 - was unavailable for comment.

An announcement could come as soon as Sunday, but no press conference has
yet been scheduled.

Erickson's contract at Idaho calls for a $150,000 buyout to Idaho should he
leave for another job by Feb. 7.

Erickson does come with baggage. He was arrested for DUI in 1995, and his
teams at Miami and Oregon State were often characterized as over-aggressive
and undisciplined.

Idaho offensive coordinator is Dan Cozzetto - who served in that capacity at
ASU from 1992-99 - will be part of Erickson's staff in Tempe. A likely
addition is current ASU cornerbacks coach Al Simmons, who was an assistant
to Erickson at Oregon State and the 49ers.
