There is an excellent article on Walmart in Germany in theAugusut
5th-11th Economist on p.54. The title is Heading for the exit.
After struggling for years, Wal-Mart withdraws from Germany by
selling 85 of their Super Stores
to a German firm. According to the Economist their first error was to
appoint a boss for Germany who spoke no German. Not only that, he
insisted that his managers work in English. The next overall boss
tried to run the show from England. This leaves Walmart presence
only in England.

In May Walmart pulled out of South Korea where it had a loss making
network of 16 stores. The Economists says that Japan may be next.
Walmart's primary
target now is China and India. The good news for Walmart is that it took
a one billion dollar one time loss charge on taxes.
