The following press release was sent out this morning in reference to
the e-mail spoofing on October 6, 2005. I am posting it here since it
was of interest to some of you.
MOSCOW POLICE DEPARTMENT
118 East 4th Street
Moscow, Idaho 83843
Tel: 208-882-COPS Fax: 208-882-4020
October 21, 2005
On 10/06/05 the Moscow Police Department began an investigation into a
possible computer crime under Idaho Code 18-2202. This investigation
focused on an e-mail sent to 28,000 University of Idaho accounts
claiming the University restricted academic freedom and had a fake sign
off using President Tim White's name.
Working closely with the University of Idaho's Internet technicians it
was determined that the e-mail was generated on an Adelphia (IP)
address. The technicians reported there was no evidence any University
of Idaho computer system was compromised or illegally used to facilitate
the e-mail. After reviewing the findings with the Latah County
Prosecutor's Office it was determined that no computer crime occurred
under Idaho Code and the criminal case is now closed
The University's investigation is on-going. The University will handle
the matter internally to determine if any policies were violated.
